Lancaster and York: The Wars of the Roses by Alison Weir
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I found this a good overview of this period of civil wars though perhaps it’s easier to not think of them as civil wars, as Ms Weir concludes. Nevertheless, this account is good and detailed and steps towards the conflict with an inexorable strength from the very beginning of the 15th century.
A detail I definitely appreciated was the inclusion of a lot of primary sources which nicely break the narrative and yet add character. I also liked the fact that the author did not demonise any person unduly, except perhaps Queen Margaret who indeed could be blamed for a lot in these conflicts. Nevertheless, these conclusions were greatly left up to the reader, and that is a good option to have.
