In truth I hadn’t expected to enjoy this title as much as I did. Not only do none of the characters we are previously familiar with show up, but we are also in a period and time that we cannot define. It’s clear, however, that much like the runabout story, this leads into its own minor arc that will play out with respect to the rest of the story.
What we do have are a number of characters, of whom we know little for the majority of the story. The people who should perhaps look the strongest, end up being some of the most dodgy—at least if you believe what the author makes them say or think, but that’s again not atypical of Ms Rusch’s style.
What does bear commenting on is how the author managed to make archaeology—a fairly clear science with little to add “murderous” excitement—into yet another blockbuster novel that sweeps all those assumptions under the carpet. I can’t stress enough how taking these seemingly typical professions and jumping into them for a closer look at the day to day makes me want to carry on to see who else will be a part of these stories.
As it is, this story is wonderful!
