Review: Resolute, Jack Campbell

Rating: 4 out of 5

I’ve been distanced from the Lost Fleet world for a while so it took me a moment to come back in. Yet, I found Geary pleasant as always with the action taking unexpected turns. The author’s scope expands with every book as now there aren’t just two human factions to potentially deal with, but several others too.

But first on the conditions that we see here: on the on hand, a relatively motley collection of the Fleet, the admiral’s staff, former Syndics, and a few others against a plot to accomplish some uncertain aims. At times, this read like a decent detective story which was all for the best actually, making a nice change from the typical combat–break–combat format.

The combat does come, but not before there’s some heavy thinking on either side, and knowing the (at least partially) repetitive nature of how this combat is depicted, this actually makes for a much better book. Less combat, more thinking and more diplomacy: and the battle has a slightly different objective to the previous ones as well.

All in all, I think I like this series more than I remembered and I really want to finish the one title I’ve not seen yet.
