This is clearly one of my all time favourite books. Not only did Mr Tolkien craft a world unparalleled in depth, his use of language in doing so gives many an opportunity to improve one’s English. This time round I picked the good trilogy up again some years after having read it latest, and it was a pleasure to walk again with the heroes of the Fellowship of the Ring through thick and thin.
In many cases, some of the aspects which I have previously considered weaker parts — for example, the story of Eowyn and Faramir — have improved in the re-reads such that now these connections between the characters feel more truthful and likeable than they previously would have.
What more is there to be said? For me, this time round, not much else, but I’ve enjoyed looking at my previous reviews of this book: though my original memories of reading ‘The Two Towers’ and ‘The Return of the King’ some twenty years ago are lost, I can remember having enjoyed it very much. Fortunately, I made a better effort with some of the reviews after that time (well, in 2013…). And, in a similar vein, I also hope to return this review again in a few years’ time.
