Raina Serpell’s story of how she ended up in command was more of less what I expected—which is not to say I expected everything that happened in the novella or even the majority, but the general level of incompetence was predictable. All the more was I surprised by some of the choices that she had to go for in order to maintain her own dignity, for lack of a better word.
The main downside of this story is that the choice that the Renegat’s crew members opted for was pretty straightforward. We didn’t see anything from the other side as the only person talking here was Raina, so the motivations and expectations of the other folks—remain null. In an universe where talking makes much more sense than shooting, this doesn’t really make sense to me.
But, I’m happy to say this makes me level again with the court martial, into which I’m hoping to give now.
